AI-Generated Phishing Emails: The Growing Threat to Real Estate Transactions

by Jodi Ramsey

Gone are the days when scam emails were easy to spot due to poor grammar and awkward phrasing. Today, AI-generated phishing emails are indistinguishable from real communications, making real estate fraud more dangerous than ever.

How AI is Supercharging Phishing Scams

Phishing scams involve fraudulent emails designed to trick victims into revealing sensitive information or making unauthorized transactions. AI now allows scammers to:

  • Generate perfectly written emails that look professional and error-free

  • Personalize messages by pulling information from social media and public records

  • Use AI chatbots to interact with victims, making the fraud even more convincing

These phishing emails often appear to come from legitimate sources such as real estate agents, title companies, or escrow officers, luring victims into transferring funds or providing personal information that can be used for identity theft.

Example Case: A homebuyer in California lost $200,000 after receiving an email that appeared to come from their real estate attorney. The email contained no spelling errors, referenced real transaction details, and even included the attorney’s official email signature. The only red flag? The email came from an address that was one letter off from the real attorney’s email. (FBI Internet Crime Report, 2023).

How to Protect Yourself from Phishing Emails

  1. Verify the sender's email address carefully. Look for small discrepancies that indicate a fake email.

  2. Be cautious of urgent requests. Scammers often pressure victims into acting quickly before verifying details.

  3. Confirm wiring instructions by phone. Always call a trusted number to verify details before transferring money.

  4. Use secure communication channels. Title companies often provide encrypted portals for document sharing.
